Psychedelic Porn Crumpets have found god in a tomato, didn't they ?

Dernière mise à jour : 24 avr. 2024

Before we talk about why you should give this band a go, let me tell you how I discovered it. A couple years back, I was scrolling through a youtube playlist, when this name sparked among the suggestions. I thought the band’s name was funny, and then I saw the song’s title, and it was even funnier; the song was called “Found God In a Tomato”. With a band name and a title like that, I couldn’t just ignore the fact that this song exists...

I clicked on it… and I was NOT disappointed at all : A vibrant strumming of electric guitar in the beginning that coherently leads to an intense instrumental solo before the song stops for a few seconds, trying to catch its breath, as if to say “we’re just getting started”.

Then, another fast melody begins, followed by violent guitar shreds playing in synch with the drum beats. Through the sudden speediness of the music you can picture the band members going wild, before the lead singer finally decides to shout some lyrics about two and a half minutes after the song started.

And it goes on like that : lyrics shouted at the top of the lung, an epic instrumental, then another verse, then another solo… a f’king musical trip into the blissfulness of psychedelic rock. It lasts about nine minutes, but can feel like an eternity in one’s mind.

BREF ! Without further ado, shall I introduce the band?

Psychedelic Porn Crumpets is an Australian band based in Perth. Founded in 2014, they specialize in -as the name suggests- psychedelic rock. The members say that their major musical influences come from bands like Tame Impala and King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. According to an article published in last.fm, the lead guitarist Luke Parish is mainly inspired by David Gilmore from Pink Floyd in his guitar strokes.

You Blackhole diggers might be wondering about the band name and how it was inspired. Well, apparently, it was a random choice that sounded amusing to the band members after a little brainstorming, so they went along with it.

Between the years 2016 and 2022, the band released five albums and one EP that can be accessed in four different formats: CD, LP, digital download and streaming.

In 2018, Psychedelic Porn Crumpets won an award for ‘Most Popular Live Act’ at the West Australian Music Industry Awards (WAMIs). The band has also won two prizes for “Best Music Video” in 2018 and 2020, for their songs ‘Social Candy’ and ‘Mr Prism’, respectively. The first evokes surrealist visuals, while Mr Prism is directly inspired from Alice In Wonderland.

Another particularity found in the band is their writing process: usually the lyrics come last, as they are actually built around the jam, the riffs and the melodies. There’s no well-established structure, they keep their options open as they write a song, letting their musical ear take the lead of the composition.

Be it through the music, the twisted lyrics or the eccentric, vibrant and psychedelic visuals in the official music videos, what the band tries to do most is to add a post-modern touch to their art. As they pointed out in an interview posted on pilerats.com:

“We’d like to find something that is classic and golden and give it a modern twist. Because everything has been done, there are no unturned stones. It’s just about piecing the stones together and painting it how you want.”

So there you have it. If you happen to be aficionados of psychedelic/progressive/garage/alt rock, then this Aussie band is definitely for you to listen to.
